Overview
This Privacy Policy explains what information Kambani collects when you use our app and website, how we use it, and the choices you have. Kambani is a free language-learning app for Zambian languages. We aim to collect only what is needed to run the app, keep your account secure, and improve your learning experience. We do not sell your personal information.
Information you provide
When you create an account, you provide:
- Email address — used to create your account, verify it, and help you reset your password.
- Username — the display name other learners see.
- Password — stored only as a one-way hash; we never see or store it in plain text.
If you sign in with Google or Apple, we receive the email address and profile picture associated with that account to set up your Kambani account. You can also use these providers to sign in.
Information created as you learn
To personalize your lessons and track your progress, we record learning data tied to your account, such as:
- Lessons and exercises you complete, your answers, and your scores;
- Streaks, daily goals, XP, level, hearts, and gems;
- The languages you are learning and your daily goal;
- Words you have favourited and your review history.
Friends and social features
You can add friends by searching for their exact username. We do not upload your contacts or phone address book, and you cannot be found by phone number or email. Between friends, we share limited information such as usernames, avatars, lesson activity, and streak-freeze gifts. There is no private messaging and no photo or video sharing.
Device and technical information
We collect limited technical information needed to run the app securely, including your device type, your time zone and language settings (so reminders and daily goals line up with your day), and a push-notification token if you turn on notifications. Our servers also log basic request information, such as the date and approximate time of a request and an IP address, for security and reliability.
If the app crashes or something goes wrong, we may receive an error report that helps us find and fix the problem. These reports are limited to technical details and do not include the content you type.
What we do not collect
We do not knowingly collect sensitive personal details such as your real name, date of birth, age, gender, government ID, home address, precise location, or payment card details. Kambani does not include advertising, and the website (kambani.live) does not use advertising cookies or third-party advertising trackers.
How we use information
We use the information described above to:
- Create and secure your account, and recognize you when you sign in;
- Provide lessons, track progress, award streaks and achievements, and tailor what you practice;
- Deliver notifications and reminders you have turned on;
- Enable friend features and shared activity;
- Keep the service reliable and secure, troubleshoot problems, and fix bugs;
- Respond to your requests and comply with our legal obligations.
How we share information
We do not sell your personal information. We share information only in limited ways:
- With trusted service providers that help us run Kambani — for example, the providers we use for sign-in with Google and Apple, delivering push notifications, and sending emails. These providers process data on our behalf and only to provide those services.
- With other users, the limited information described in the “Friends and social features” section.
- If required to do so by law, or to protect the rights, property, or safety of Kambani, our users, or others.
Children
Kambani is designed for general use and is not directed at young children. If you believe a child has provided us with personal information, please contact us and we will take steps to delete it.
How long we keep information
We keep your information for as long as your account is active, and afterwards only as needed to meet our legal obligations, resolve disputes, and enforce our agreements. To request that your account and associated data be deleted, contact us at the email below and we will action it within a reasonable time.
Security
We use reasonable measures to protect your information — including hashed passwords and access controls. No method of transmission or storage is completely secure, so we cannot guarantee absolute security.
Your choices
You can:
- Update your username and notification preferences in the app;
- Turn push notifications on or off in your device settings at any time;
- Request access to, a copy of, correction of, or deletion of your personal information by contacting us.
Depending on where you live, you may have additional rights under local data protection laws. Nothing in this policy limits any rights you may have under those laws.
Changes to this policy
If we make material changes to this Privacy Policy, we will update the “Effective date” above and, where appropriate, notify you in the app. Continued use of Kambani after a change takes effect means you accept the updated policy.
